Existing users of timEd 1.10 may want to migrate to 1.12.
Note 1.12 is a "refreshed" version of timEd 1.10.
Version 7 nodelist lookup support has been removed from version 1.12
due to licensing issues, but otherwise the program is
fully-functional.
After many years, a 32-bit Windows NT version of timEd is now
available.
Also, many Y2K bugs have been fixed since the 1.10 release.
The new version may be downloaded from here:
DOS version: http://dl.ozzmosis.com/timed/tim112.zip
Windows NT version: http://dl.ozzmosis.com/timed/tim112n.zip OS/2

timEd change log
================
1.12
----
* Version 1.12 released. This is considered a "refresh" release
built using OpenWatcom 1.9 and aside from the removal of V7
nodelist lookup functionality (see below) should be
feature-identical to the 1.10 version.
This version is built from a different code branch from the UNIX
version, 1.11.
It is intended the branches will be merged in a future release,
adding new features from the UNIX version, and JAM and Hudson
support to the UNIX version.
* Numerous Y2K bugs were fixed in the source code, with thanks to
Wilfried Brinkmann and Tobias Ernst for their initial work with
patching the timEd binaries back in 1999 (ARTFIX07.ZIP).
* Windows NT port. Gerard van Essen began porting timEd to Windows
NT in 1996 but the code was abandoned and incomplete. In 2018 the
Windows NT port was finally completed by Andrew Clarke and is
considered to be quite stable and usable.
* Fixes to prevent crashes when screen width is greater than 132
columns.
* timED did not add additional '>'s to quoted messages. Fixed,
thanks to Meikel Brandmeyer.
* Added %mmon variable for HELLO, REPHELLO, FOLLOWHELLO strings. It
expands to a two-digit month with a leading zero digit (ie.
01-12).
* V7 nodelist lookup is currently disabled.
The V7 lookup functions requires the Mix C Database Toolchest, a commercial library which cannot be distributed as open source.
It is still possible to do nodelist lookups on FidoUser or
FrontDoor format nodelists.
Any reference to V7 nodelists in TIMED.DOC is currently erroneous
and should be ignored.
It is hoped to reintroduced this functionality in a later version.
* timEd is now permanently "registered", and will declare itself
registered with the name specified in TIMED.CFG.
* timEd's version number and build timestamp can now be viewed by
running timEd with the -v parameter:
TIMED.EXE -v

Announcing the release of timEd version 1.12!
timEd is a reliable and fast message editor for FidoNet,
written by Gerard van Essen. It supports JAM, Squish,
Hudson and *.MSG message bases.
Added to this basis are many useful functions like nodelist
browsing, redefinable keys and macros, character translation,
support for encryption and spellchecking and many other things.
However, timEd is still a fast no-nonsense editor, giving you
speed and reliablity as it's major 'features'!

The OS/2 version cannot read a fastecho.cfg.
The timkeys.cfg is also missing from the archive; I had to extract
it from the DOS/386 version.
The DOS/386 version seems to run, but the message scan is very slow.

Ah. I expected there would still be some issues with structure
alignment with some tosser's config files.
I'll look into it.
I assume you're using FastEcho 1.46.1.

Oh, nuts! I forgot to include timkeys.cfg in the distfiles!

Is it slower than the 1.10 DOS/386 version?

No, it doesn't seem to be.

Currently running 1.3 -- I've a request for a behaviour change, please:
When you open an area that has no messages, neither right arrow
nor enter will get you out of that area. Only Escape works to get
you back to the master list.
I love to be able to just right arrow to the next area with messages!
I agree, it should look and work more like the "End of messages in
this area!" message.
I'll have a look. :)
Thanks -- I'm only thinking of you and trying to prevent boredom
for you! :-)

I spoke too soon -- when it scans for new mail from a new area it
doesn't seem to stop at the mail with any consistency -- I'm not
sure I can describe the behaviour - yet.
Over the past couple of months I've spent considerable free time working on rebuilding the original timEd sources using OpenWatcom 1.9 and getting it to a point where it can be released as a new version.

Ah. I might not be able to do much about improving it as the code
there is a bit of a maze.
I encountered several crashes just trying to get it to work. :)
But still, let me know if you can, so we can document it at the very
least.

If I use the old version, a "next" scan (+) stops on Artware, which
is the first area with new traffic. If I use 1.3.1, the scan goes
right past Artware and several others and stops almost at random on
an area with new traffic (although it always stops there, so it's
not actually random!)
Going by your tearline I'm assuming you're running Linux.
I haven't tested it but the Windows version of timEd should work well under WINE, although console apps in WINE don't look the best and I'm
not sure the user has any control over what display font it uses.
In any case today I began porting the original code to BSD & Linux, without the XMSGAPI dependency that the old UNIX port had. This will
mean the BSD & Linux version will finally support Hudson, JAM, Squish
and *.MSG. Stay tuned. :)
OK, confirmed here.
It's picking the wrong next area, but there seems to be a pattern to
it in my testing. I just don't understand why yet.

I'm unable to persuade TimedNT to read z:\nodelist\nodelist.* -- on a different network computer. I'm just going to test and see if it will
read locally.
And no, that makes no difference either :-(
Windows 10 64 bit, btw.

After installing, configuring and running the Windows version(on
Win7), I'm getting a message telling me that 'timed.hlp' is missing
when I press <F1>.
However, I've dragged a copy out of the source and put it in my timEd directory but when I now press F1, nothing at all happens.
The code to display the help file is pretty simple and has
reasonable error checking, so I can't even speculate as to what's
wrong there.
Anyone else having the same problem?

Ah yes, I still left out the help file from the archives. :-(
Downloading it from the source code on GitHub works, or from an earlier version of timEd.

I can't replicate that here in Windows 7. It works for me.

Further to my previous post about this, I've discovered that it
depends on a combination of "Screen Buffer Size" and "Window Size" in
my Win7 console along with the "Startup_Lines" setting in "timed.cfg"
as to whether the online help displays or not.

I'm unable to reproduce that behaviour here using timEd/NT 1.30 in
Windows 7 64-bit.
Tested utheg the latest Zone 3 nodelist (nodelist.138), though any nodelist should work.
File permission problem?
Are there any error messages?
eg.
Could not match FidoNodelist pattern 'nodelist.*'!
