    Hello All,

We have a new one. Alexandr Kruglikov of 2:5053/58.

A brand new node, he appeared in this morning's NODELIST.287. Started with a IPv6 capable node right away. Isn't that remarkable?

Alexandr, welcome to Fidonet and welcome to the Fidonet IPv6 club!

    Cheers, Michiel

It's good news that I was in the nodelist, all set up just last night.
Node immediately began working to support Ipv6, and it was intended.

No. I have a keyboard with Cyrillic labels and I have installed the driver for it. So I can display and type in the Russian alphabet. But I do not speak the language. I would like to, but languages were never my strong point and I am too old to learn a new language.

    But there is Google translate...

Your English is way better than my Russian. :-)

Today I got some bad news. My ISP (Ziggo) is going the DFS-lite route when rolling out IPv6. :-(

That's a pity! You could rent some inexpensive virtual server with an IPv4 and IPv6 address and use socat or ssh to to forward binkp from the server's IPv4 address to your IPv6 address at home.

    Regards,
    Markus

Well, I saw it coming. I already mentioned this as a realistic scenario a couple of years ago in a Fidonews article. We have apparently reached the point that not everyone can have a public IPv4 address.

You could rent some inexpensive virtual server with an
IPv4 and IPv6 address and use socat or ssh to to forward binkp from
the server's IPv4 address to your IPv6 address at home.

I do not know how to deal with it yet. I have some time. They have started with new customers. New customers get IPv6 via DS-lite. Existing customers will be converted "later". They are a bit vague on it. They also said that they would look for a solution for the estimated 1% of customers that need a public IPv4 address.

We may see the reverse of what he.net and SixXs are offering now: Providers offering a public IPv4 address via a 4in6 tunnel. I do not expect such a service to be free...

    Cheers, Michiel

Where is your problem, you have been promoting IPv6 because of a shortage
of IPv4 addresses for a long time. Now that the moment is there you are
cross that you do not get your own IPv4 address.

At least you can still reach those who have not converted to IPv6.

As for providing services on IPv4, that was never allowed in the contract
you have. For that there is a business account available, that will probably
come with a static IPv4 address for some time to come.

"Cross" is the wrong word. And I can not deny I saw it coming. I had hoped though that existing customers could keep their IPv4 address for some time, at least till the conversion to an IPv6 internet was almost ready.

At least you can still reach those who have not converted to IPv6.

And I can still make outgoing connections on IPv4. But it does severely restrict my Fiodonet connectivity as long as the majority of Fidonet nodes has not yet converted to IPv6.

As for providing services on IPv4, that was never allowed in the
contract you have. For that there is a business account available,
that will probably come with a static IPv4 address for some time to

Not so. When I left HccNet (dsl) in favour of Casema, I specifically asked if running servers was allowed and the answer was yes. I know that some ISPs have a ban against running servers in the contract, but that is not the case here.

I can always change providers. Xs4all hands out dual stack connections.

    Cheers, Michiel

I use only native IPv6 and no more tunnels.
