What exactly are you changing? Just the host name of your system or
are you switching DNS providers? And how does that help in getting the T-shirt?

I am switching the DNS provider.
The current one does not offer IPv6 NSes, hence the lack of T-Shirt. (zoneedit.com -> he.net)

short Update.
My NIC was quit nice, and they enabled the NSes (which were by then
not authorative).
I pressed a button on the he.net page, and all is fine now.

Most NICs test for authoritative nameservers as a requirement for
updates. And this can't be circumvented because it's
automated that way.
And I was not allowed to use two addresses in the same /24 in a high availability data center, each nameserver having two uplinks and
running OSPF. We even ran anycast back then across all data centers in
the EU for some services. Too advanced for some people ;)

I have asked some times about IPv6.
The answer was always the same wishy washy ... yes ... in the future
...
Regarding my business, I am using the free service from both
companies. So apart from user counts, I did not much contribute to
their material wellbeing.
And I was quit happy with zoneedit.com ... apart from IPv6.

Sometimes (much) later there will be an additional outage when I move
my Fido node to a virtual server. (v4/v6 addresses already fixed, fido
SW compiler, I "just" need to transfer the config, scripts and
msgbase)

Just to inform you that there will be an outage of my system.I still have to do the same one of these days. I'm still stuck at the level prior to sage. :(

Deutsche Telekom introduced a low-speed DSL version called DSL light, which was 386kbps downstream, to increase their DSL reach.

Out of curiosity ... was this based on RE-ADSL?
Reach Enhanced ADSL?

Well ... the DNS transition went wonderfully :)
But I have T-Shirt related issues ;)
It tries to resolve domain/ipv6 now ...
Somehow it messed up ... (I think I used that many years ago for a
HTTPD test)
In the worst case I have to reset the test and start over ... no
worries
I have to plan this very well, as I need to transition everything in
one go ... do not feel like it today ...

Currently, my DNS provider's nameservers have IPv4 glue only. And with PremiumDNS if I go with private nameservers, the PremiumDNS I paid for isn't used. So my best bet is probably to take a look at another (hopefully free?), non-permanent option that I can use quickly just to make he.net happy.
Was that Markus offering up some free nameservers? :)
I'm currently out with a work injury (shattered my heel bone) so I had
the time.

Yes.
But I used the he.net free DNS, works great ;)
Hope it is healing nicely!

Only issue I had is that they only switch the DNS servers authorative, when you delegate the domain. And usually the domain is only delegated when the DNSes are authorative.
I had no issues at all. I added my DNS to dns.he.net
and then I was able to complete the sage test!
I see your name on the Last 10 list, and I am 3 people after you. :)

After this I went back to my registrar and set everything back to
their standard nameservers so I could re-enable my PremiumDNS features that I paid for (they only support premium services on their own nameservers).
While I've finally finished the sage test and am getting a t-shirt, I don't think I'm quite done yet. I may end up transferring my domain to
a service that does indeed provide both IPv4 and IPv6 standard
nameservers soon now that I've realized what my current DNS hosting facility isn't providing me with!

My experience is that these batches are not run very often.
I had to wait more than two month IIRC. So have patience.
