    Folks,

I uploaded WCGL100B.ZIP on the BBS. This is the BETA version
of the anti-spam Wildcat! Grey Listing system. I posted for
    early explorers and testers.

GREY LISTING is a very highly effective ANTI-SPAM system. It
works on the basis of REJECTING the incoming mail and using the
idea that all GOOD MAIL will retry again where it is then accepted.
Since most BAD MAIL will not try again, you will be able to see a
    very high blockage rate.

    Summary of how it works:

    Mail Comes In

SMTPFILTER-WCGREYLIST checks the greylist to see
if you want to test it. The greylist if your address
or the addresses you want to protect.

If the mail is for an address in the greylist, the mail is
    rejected with a 451 code.

    451 tells the sender

    "Temporary Rejection. Try Again"

If this was a real GOOD system, following all the
rules of retrying, then it will reschedule to try again
with 1 to 60 minutes, typically. When the good system
tries again with the PERIOD you set in the setup, then
the mail is accepted the second time around.

GREYLISTING works because the BAD GUY doesn't care. He
doesn't listen and doesn't try again most of the time.
He might try again with a DIFFERENT message, but not
    the same one.

It is a controversial method. No one likes to see mail be rejected
the first time, especially for BUSINESS systems. But if you are
running a real SMTP server, then typically there do not no problems.

So the system comes with WHITE LISTING, AUTO-CHECKING FOR WHITE
LIST, features to avoid using greylisting on your social or
    business network.

The system works so well, if I got 3 spams in the pass three weeks,
    it is alot!!

It also comes with web-base manager to help you manage it, and
    also see the statistics.

NOTE: At this time, you have to run the statistics in order to
PRUNE out old blockages of mail. For now, you should do this
once and awhile. At some point, we will have a WCEVENT idea.

Check it out!! I've been running it non-stop for the last 4-5 months.

All ideas are welcome especially for the web-based AVS manager.

    Hector:
I like the greylisting idea. I never thought about the temporary rejection - try again thing. Over the past couple of years I have put off doing the
wcsap install mainly because I have been covered up with company details. However, I plan to take a look at the greylisting thing next week.

One question; do I need to install wcsap first?

Or, is this a simple change in the DATA\WCSMTP.INI attempt timing?

    Thanks again,
    John Kidwell

WCSAP is really a separate package from SMTPFILTER which is a new WCX
hooking system for 3rd party developers to write SMTPFILTER-myapp.WCX applications and put them in the DATA\SMTPFILTERHOOKLOADER.INI to run in
    the order you want.

WCSAP is indepedent and is run after the address information is obtained (envelope).

SMTPFILTER is design to run after WCSAP and after the DATA is obtained
(inside the envelope, the body of the message).

So WCSAP is to check the address.

SMTPFILTER is to the BODY (and addresss too) or whatever you want it to do. People have hooks to forward email, copy email or people like Kloos's wsSpamGuard use it to tie into his ANTI-SPAM system.

DATA\WCSMTP.INI was added to get new setup information. For now, it only
has the timing stuff that we needed to add for the WCGREYLIST system, which
    is a SMTPFILTER application.

    Hope this helps
