    Hi Ed,

Long time no read. This echo seems to be almost abandoned.

There have been no messages since the one dated above, until the one
    dated oct. 2nd to Ben.

    Both arrived today, oct.4th.

I admit that I have'nt put in any new msgs into this echo, since the
discussion has been about a HD for your W95 laptop, and I haven't had
anything to add to that, since I mentioned my daughters PC with a 40Gb
    HD.

I'm still checking the echo every day, but it has been empty.

The same goes for the WINDOWS echo.

Where have all the people gone??

Especially I miss Jean, and Alan.

It would be nice to read/write in this echo too. As it has been now,
I have spent time reding/writing in the sysop echo.

    Good evening Paul,

    Nice to read you again.

Like you and Jean, I have been scanning this echo all along. Just
    lurking, with nothing to say.[gulp]

Knowing that Jean recently had a blockage in the arteries from/to the
heart, and that he is only one year younger than I, makes me worry about
    how he's recovering.

Ahmm... the "Great Race" is on this weekend, Holger. The Bathurst
1000 carnival starts tomorrow (my time), and goes on through to the
main race on Sunday. Keep an eye out for it in your TV guide(s).
    :)

Oh yes I know. My GS is apparently reading some motor news that I don't
know about, and he told me about it. I'm looking forward to it.

I'm following the program listings on MotorsTV, (thanks for the URL),
but on tuesday they did only have info up to sept. 10, and I saw no
signs of Bathurst up to that date, neither did they have a week listing extending beyond sept 7th.

I do however expect a new weekly listing today, since usually they do
have a new listing on thursdays.

On the Windows front, I'm progressing, and hoping it wouldn't do its old-time-tricks of suddently removing programs. That happened on the
laptop a couple of days ago.

On the stationary machine it was still working yesterday, knock-on-wood!

A couple of days ago, it had made the VLC progran unusable, so I had to reinsltall it. I got the original icon on the bottom line, but the icon
on the desktop, the VLC icon still tells me that the shortcut doesn't
work, because it can't find VLC.exe, even though it's still and now in
the original directory. Oh well, Windows!!!

I did also buy a speaker set, so I didn't have to wear headphones, while listening to music, and the videos Johan (the GS), sent me from the
birthday present, driving different sportcars on a track, that he
    received from his wife, Melissa.

Melissa got a permanent job at the St. G”rans hospital, and recently she
also got her original title back, that one she had at the US hospital,
where she worked b4 moving to Sweden.

On the speaker front, I bought a similar set that I have bought a couple
of years ago for my 23" LED TV, that does have a built-in DVD reader.

I have been satisfied with them, but when I connected the new set to the stationary computer I got very distorted sound. I did connect them to the laptop, same distorted sound.

Then, I connected the new set to the TV, instead of the earlier ones.
Nice and clean audio from the same DVD as b4.

    Have a nice evening,

    Holger

Cool. Apparently this year's trophy will be celebrating Peter Brock's memory.

On the Windows front, I'm progressing, and hoping it wouldn't do its old-time-tricks of suddently removing programs. That happened on the laptop a couple of days ago.

I gave up on Windows 8.1 after I got a pop-up from Hewlett-Packard advising that the warranty had expired, and, also being bugged by Avast warnings about renewing my registration. There were other reasons similar to yours...

Windows used to take some sort of perverted pleasure from alternately killing running programs. The affected programs included: a binkD point (just the mailer, nothing else behind it); also, a BOINC manager running a couple of SETI
jobs; and, the easiest to notice when -not- running were some desktop "gadgets"
providing an analogue clock and a couple of graph meters measuring network & memory usage.

But the crunch for Windows was when it started to kill off running VirtualBox PCs just for kicks. That I couldn't stand. I knew then that Windows didn't have a future for me on that machine.

Windows was probably running a background timer compiling statistics for M$, to
see how long it took me to notice something was missing.

On the stationary machine it was still working yesterday, knock-on-wood!

    Watch for splinters! :)

A couple of days ago, it had made the VLC progran unusable, so I had to reinsltall it. I got the original icon on the bottom line, but the icon

the original directory. Oh well, Windows!!!

I've had mixed results with VLC just in the last week, with my new Linux configuration. But with regard to Windows, I think there's dialogue via a right-click & properties to show Windows where that shortcut can find the .exe file.

Only a listing for next week, but no Bathurst there, but however when I

The other day, Windows 10 decided to upgrade, by itself on the
stationary machine. I still don't know if that was the anniversary
upgrade that I have read about, but ZoneAlarm, nor AVG did inform me,
    about an incoming connection,

I know that on the laptop, I have set the configuration to not allow
updates without my consent, but I'll have to check the configuration of
    the stationary machine.

On an old laptop with XP, ZA always asked me to allow or disallow any in
or outgoing connections, but neither the laptop nor stationary machines,
with Win10, have so far given such warnings.

Windows used to take some sort of perverted pleasure from

This was not the first time it did allow upgrades, but when AVG did it,

    Mike,

I am not sure if I have access to the sysop echo on this BBS.

No, as it is restricted to sysops you should not have access. Let me know if you do. :)

With the BBS packages I've run (GT Power, Synchronet, and now VADV32), I
used to set the [ADM] and Sysop areas for Confirmed Visiting Sysops. Now,
I just set them to my level (255, the highest allowed)...then no one else
gets access to them. Besides, if the Visiting Sysop is part of a same BBS message network that I am, they should have that area, and be able to reply
    to it, on their BBS.

As a side note, I know that GT Power handles netmail and echomail
differently than FIDONet...and one HAS to be running GT Power software
to get the netmail and echomail. I knew that current developer Tom Watt
had made it freeware for non-commercial use, but that the GT Power Sysop
echoes and the netmail programs were PROPRIETARY for GT Power Sysops. But,
I think he was going to get away from any further development on the
netmail programs, and messages would be transferred by QWK Networking
with the BGNet utility (I think B.J. Guiliot made that freeware awhile
back, but I'm not sure...I know BGFAX is now freeware). Former GT Sysop
Bill Watts had files on his system that allowed GT Sysops to integrate
FIDONet style networks into their system.

Over here, while the FIDONet to GT utilities are available to all users,
I've kept the Netmail programs access ONLY to Confirmed GT Power Sysops,
who provide the garbled Netmail password for versions 14-19.

In the List I saw several GT echos, occasionally Daryl will post
messages in the GT_HamRadio echo, but that is about all the messages I can recall seeing from the GT Network.

I'm wondering if You see any other traffic coming in on the GT Net?

I do postings in the non-GT Sysop echoes of the GT Net...including
the ones on ham radio, puns, classic ads (Burma Shave), weather
    history, and bloopers.

I see the Burma Shave ads that You post in the Memories echo, and I read
the Ham Radio echo, the weather history echo sounds like it would be of interest to me, so I will check it out.

I had to do a special command line deal for the QWK Networking on the export of packets...so, I hope it's working. I'm connecting to Mike
Powell via Internet Rex, but I don't know if the stuff is transferring
    or not.

Ya got it working O.K. all the way through Mike's BBS.

    Daryl,
I did some checking... looks like your echos dried up on this end at the end
of July. Seems like the last time you were running VA we had trouble. I
think it was because VA wants to import AND export QWK packets for QWK networking, where most all other systems (I know of) expect to import REP
    and export QWK, or vise-versa.

I think we overcame that when you set up something on your end to rename
the QWK packets to REP on your end before uploading them?

As long as you are pointing to capcity2.synchro.net with IREX, and
transfering via FTP, you should at least see it connecting and making the transfers.

Some win7 computers have been changed to the non approval automatic
    updates.
Here is a blip form MS:

The July 2016 update rollup for Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and
    Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 was re-released on September 13, 2016 to
address an issue in one of the included updates and to improve the
overall reliability of the update rollup. Installing this update requires
    a restart after installation.

Important If you use Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) or System
Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) to deploy updates, you have
Automatically approve new revisions of approved updates enabled on your
WSUS or SCCM environment, and you have already deployed KB3172605
automatically when it was initially released in July 2016, this revision
will automatically deploy and require a restart after installation. You
can disable the automatic approval setting for this update rollup if you
don't intend to automatically deploy the revision of this update rollup
and its required restart. Please notice that disabling this setting would require a manual review and approval of any revisions.

I can also tell you Ed, that the form of racing in VK and ZL, is totally different from the oval races in the US.

I really enjoy looking at the races, since the drivers are more

The same goes for most international and british races.

Consequently, you both missed the boat, while an upgrade to 10 was free!
Since XPp I have not used any intermediate version of Windows, until I
received a Dell laptop with Win 10 as a xmas present from my GS.

After noting that it is a viable upgrade, I didn't waste any time to buy
a stationary machine with Win7 and upgraded it to Win10 for free.

The problems I've had, are related to moving to new programs that don't
work as the ones I have for OS/2, for example moving from PMMail to Thunderbird. There I've received help from Paul, and from Jean for the shorthands to call up functions/programmes in Win10.

I was thinking that MS would at least still offer that Malicious
Software Removal Tool for the XP box but my experience the other day

There are free programs for that purpose, but of course not everything
that glitters is gold. I did recently learn that Malware is free only
    for a limited time.

AD-aware has gone from an anti-ad software, to a 'full-fledged' virus
program. I was only interested in the anti-ad property, since I have AVG installed on both Win10 machines, as well as ZoneAlarm.

And I'm too cheap to buy a pc with a 'Newer' OS that MS wants to

Yes I know, but I haven't found that setting, even though I have tried.

When I got the Commodore 64 back in 1984, I was wanting to learn what

    Hi Ed,

Long time no read. This echo seems to be almost abandoned.

There have been no messages since the one dated above, until the one
    dated oct. 2nd to Ben.

    Both arrived today, oct.4th.

I admit that I have'nt put in any new msgs into this echo, since the discussion has been about a HD for your W95 laptop, and I haven't had anything to add to that, since I mentioned my daughters PC with a 40Gb

The last Terminal PRG I used was called Bob's Term Pro and I liked it a lot.

I couldn't Steal Taglines but it had a big buffer that let me pause the BBS
so I could save the buffer to disk, and then do that over and over until all the messages in the BBS echos got saved, then I'd Log Off and start reading
the messages I saved to disk.

Using QWK is a lot better since it let me spend less time getting the

I use FTP to grab messages from this BBS and it takes less than a minute
to do it, then I can start reading.

I see the Burma Shave ads that You post in the Memories echo, and I
read the Ham Radio echo, the weather history echo sounds like it would
be of interest to me, so I will check it out.

I originally got the data from a file from the Storm Prediction
Center. Data after 1990 is PARTIAL, but fairly comprehensive before
    then.

Oh, O.K., I may still Join the WX echo to see what's there.

Ya got it working O.K. all the way through Mike's BBS.

Well, I saw a message from Mike Powell, and apparently the data
"dried up" in late July, when Synchronet crashed...and I went back to Virtual Advanced. I redid a batchfile to process the outgoing packet,
and even ran each deal by hand to be sure that it worked. Yet, while
I'm connecting to Mike's system, nothing is transferring. So, my IREX settings may be skewed.

You and Mike will figure it out.

TTBOMK it was You Two who toyed with the idea of transferring GT Net Mail Packets over the Internet and passed the technique over to FIDONET SysOps.

So I'm sure You All can figure it out and get it working as it should.

The same goes for most international and british races.

    O.K.

I gave up on Windows 8.1 after I got a pop-up from Hewlett-Packard advising that the warranty had expired, and, also being bugged by
Avast warnings about renewing my registration.

I run XP and Vista and gonna stay with them after reading comments
on askwoody.com about Microsoft changing Win7 updates to be like
WinTen does, "Get 'Em All In One Big File",
No Option to choose from those that are proven to be Safe.

Consequently, you both missed the boat, while an upgrade to 10 was
free! Since XPp I have not used any intermediate version of Windows,
until I received a Dell laptop with Win 10 as a xmas present from my
    GS.

I looked at Microsofts free WTEN offer as being like the Apple tied to a
string on a pole that was held over the donkeys head and just a tiny BIT farther away than the donkey's tongue could touch it.

To quote: "For what the big print giveth, the small print taketh away.".

After noting that it is a viable upgrade, I didn't waste any time to
buy a stationary machine with Win7 and upgraded it to Win10 for free.

The problems I've had, are related to moving to new programs that don't work as the ones I have for OS/2, for example moving from PMMail to Thunderbird. There I've received help from Paul, and from Jean for the shorthands to call up functions/programmes in Win10.

I had one big problem with Thunderbird when several thousand messages in
the In-Box got cleared out after I compacted TB.
It didn't do that the several times I compacted messages before, but it sure did it that day.

I still use TB, I just move messages out of the In-Box to other Boxes I've
    made for them.

I was thinking that MS would at least still offer that Malicious
Software Removal Tool for the XP box but my experience the other day taught me that they don't care to protect what they sell.

There are free programs for that purpose, but of course not everything that glitters is gold. I did recently learn that Malware is free only
    for a limited time.

If You are speaking of MALWAREBYTES, they have a Free and a Paid version.
I use the Free and manually update the Definitions as I want to, the Paid version does that automagically.

AD-aware has gone from an anti-ad software, to a 'full-fledged' virus program. I was only interested in the anti-ad property, since I have
AVG installed on both Win10 machines, as well as ZoneAlarm.

Recently I read that AVAST! owns AVG now.
Have You read about that too?

And I'm too cheap to buy a pc with a 'Newer' OS that MS wants to
    Control from their HQ.

Suit yourself, anyway you did miss the free boat, hi.

    Enjoy the "Apple".

    Ed,

TTBOMK it was You Two who toyed with the idea of transferring GT Net
Mail Packets over the Internet and passed the technique over to FIDONET SysOps.

So I'm sure You All can figure it out and get it working as it should.

A new problem has cropped up. VADV32's FIDONet tosser, VFIDO, is
apparently once again sending out duplicate MSGID's -- I had netmail
routing problems with it awhile back.

The options I have (most to least desireable) are as follows:

    1) Try to switch the FIDONet style message networks to QWK
NETWORKING -- but not every FIDONet network has that. It
would be a hassle to switch this, as well as the hubs for
    such.

    2) REMOVE all the message networks, and make the BBS a
LOCAL MESSAGE BOARD only. The rest of the BBS would remain
    the same.

    3) Look into switching BBS software...but my options here
    are limited:

    a) GT Power does have telnet...but no website interface, and
no capability for email. Plus, I don't care for its QWK Mail
    setup.

    b) Synchronet crashed on me big time in late July...and with
the lack of support and documentation for Mystic, I really
don't want to mess with them.

    c) There are so few telnet/web BBS packages out there anymore,
    and I really don't want to have to learn a whole new setup;
never mind paying exhorbitant registration fees for some of
    these packages.

    3) Say "the hell with it", and shut everything down after
25+ years of Sysoping, virtually ending BBSing in Arkansas.

I don't know how long it will take to get a reply from
the developer of VADV32 (Steve Winn), or if anything can
be done. But, the future of the BBS hinges on it.

Steve is so busy with other things that I have no idea when I'll get
    a reply.

I really don't want to try to go to another BBS and set up an account
to read echoes...I prefer them on my BBS, but some of the message
networks I have only offer FTN access, and NOT QWK Networking.

To make matters worse, the file transfer deal (VXYZ) apparently is
timing out on some transfers. Then, CEXYZ locked on me when I tried to
get this packet, and would not take a test file upload.

If this wasn't bad enough, my Mom's copy of Windows 7 32-bit that
we bought from Amazon apparently has an invalid key. When we tried
to get support, or contact them...never mind trying to get a new
copy...we were bombarded with "upgrade to Windows 10". I said "SCREW
THAT!!". So, we went on Amazon, and ordered a new copy, which was $50
more than what we paid when we ordered it earlier this month. I guess
M$ is trying to get rid of all the copies of anything before Windows
10, and FORCE everyone to go to it.

Then, after the DYN DDoS crash on Friday (thankfully, my Mom and
I were out on errands much of the day), and all this mess...I've
about had it with computers this week.

I really don't want to change software, and I'd rather drop all of
the message networks, and make it a local board only. No one else
    reads the other areas anyway.

    Ed,

Has Mike mentioned to You what Me and Him have been writing about concerning MultiMail and SLMR not displaying messages in the Personal area?

    You are not alone.

I figured out the deal with QWK tossing on the REP packet creation.
MultiMail apparently does NOT have a "personal mail" folder like OLX does.

Lately this XP computer has been Winning by Freezing Up the Desktop
and not even letting the Time update in the Taskbar.

Google Chrome is repeatedly locking on Facebook, especially with the
videos. To make matters worse, the copies of Windows 7 I ordered off of
Amazon are now producing nasty messages from Microsoft that "your
activation key is invalid". When I try to re-enter the key, or go to
the automated system, I get the same response...cold hearted, no support,
screw you attitude from Microsoft. When I clicked on "buy a new key
online", I was taken to a deal to PURCHASE Windows 10...and I *INSTANTLY* closed that window. Again, Microsoft is FORCING users to upgrade, which I detest.

No, I'm not ready to BOOT IT!, You can forget about asking me that.

How about blow it up??!! :P

Hope Your BBS Troubles get ironed out, I know that You have enough Troubles as is.

You're not kidding. With doing numerous things in helping my 90 year
old Mom outside the BBS, I've had little time for BBS work...and I'm
amazed I have time for the ham radio nets.

No one else has brought up...and Steve has not replied either. I had
problems with VFIDO with netmail routing quite awhile back.

I've started converting things to QWK Networking, but if that still causes issues, then I may go to a hybrid system...local messages only on the VADV32 website, then run GT Power under telnet.

Yet, I'm the only one reading the message areas. Most callers logon to
play the doors, while I do have some (mainly Guests on the website) leeching files, as it were.

    Good evening Rodrigo,

    Hello Holger. Good night!! =DD

I would like to point you folks my text editor: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B_pR-HZ0Fp03NzhiQkJadWhzb2s
I hope you folks like the text editor I love to use.

Nothing can beat the editor I'm using, The Semware editor that I have extended with translations from/to ASCII, PC8, Latin-1 and Mac!

But it is a paid solution, I prefer my freeware editor. =D

    Have a good night,

Have a good night for you too,

    Holger
