More memory might also help speed things up. If you have access to BestBuy web site, do a search on Seagate internal hard drives. They
have a 1Tb for $60 and 2Tb for $80. Both sound good.

I couldn't see trashing the two 500MB DDR 400 sticks and buying four 1GB sticks to fill all the slots, so I decided 3GB should be enough on a pc with a CPU that run at 2 Mc/s.
The XP OS is 32-Bit and I was told here that the maximum RAM it could use was 3.8GB iirc.
Is that still true?

The store I get my Technology products at has Seagate and WD HDDs
about at the same price BestBuy sells them.
I've only used Verbatim, WD and Toshiba drives for backing up the pc.
Has Seagate corrected whatever problem their drives were having in the past?
I thought to look at the Windows XP Task Manager to see what the Performance Tab Settings are, and type them in for You (and Others)
to look at.

Rather you should run one of the free clean-up programs, like CCleaner. That way you'll get rid of a lot of trash that slows the boot process.

My Mom has that on her system...but I use the Advanced System Care program suite from IOBit Software...as well as their Smart Defrag,
Malware Fighter, and Driver Booster.
We didn't have much of a winter in Arkansas...there was one brief
winter storm (if you want to call it that), that brought an inch or
two of snow in January.

G'day Ed. I still settle for XP on a couple of computers here and
have explored the ram upgrade options as you have. XP is indeed
limited to about 3GB ram (I have seen people quoting estimates between 3.25 and 3.8) So, there is no point going beyond the 3gb that you have invested in.
I have also bumped up the ram in one specific HP model (it too just had 2x500mb modules) but the mobo manual indicated that in order to
maintain and activate the fast "Dual channel" processing speeds, the
ram modules had to be in specific slots.
In my case the mobo supported up to 8gb but it only had XP 32-bit installed, so no point going beyond 3gb. However, to maintain the dual-channel speeds, the modules had to be "balanced" across the dimm slots.
Originally, the 2x500mb modules were in slot 1 in each bank. That triggered the proper dual channel mode. All I had to do was add each
1GB module right next to the 500mb module in the same bank to maintain
the balance. The "banks" are often colour-coded to indicate their
pairing. BUT, your mobo might have another design.
I won't go into techy details about all that because your mobo manual could probably explain it with illustrations for your particular mobo.
Also, the pc will only operate as fast as the slowest supported module. For example, if the 500mb modules are PC4300 rated, don't expect faster performance if you add PC6300 modules.
The best performance difference would be to main the "dual-channel"
mode vs "single-channel" mode.
Ciao! ..AA
Hi Daryl,
I don't know those programs and am satisfied with the way CCleaner and AVG keep up the guard.
Neither did we have much of a winter, but the little there was, hit me!

I was not aware of that, and thought that they were a reputable brand.
My system has a WD drive, as installed by Dell. Best I can advice is
to do some online research using Google, and/or checking some forum discussions, such as www.xpforums.com .

I like to sort on CPU usage so that I can see exactly what is using the process time. That amount of CPU usage might well be pretty normal
given your system. Again, you might be well served to look at the
forum I mentioned for help and advice from a larger audience with more direct experience.

I'm using that program myself.
The C:\ Partition is NTFS and has 194GB Used with 30GB Free = 224GB
With NTFS partitions there's no need to run a diskfrag program.
The D:\ Partition is FAT32 and has 8.06GB Used with 434MB Free =
8.48GB Total
The D:\ partition shouldn't slow down the boot process, since I imagine that everything needed is on C:\.
Starting up programs from D: could benefit from a diskfrag.
The pc has 3GB DDR 400 RAM and uses a 8.9GB Pagefile.sys file.
3Gb RAM should be more than needed for XP or XPpro. I have considerably less in my Thinkpad/XPpro. and doing well, but OTOH I'm not much for picture editing, but looking at'em is OK.
On another note: You may have got the impression that I have been badly hurt/wounded in an accident. It ain't so. Broken bones are usual here
when we have snow and ice, which is the rule during the winter.
On Jan 2nd I slipped on an ice patch an fell on my left hip. I knew immeadetely that my left leg was broken, and xray's at the hospital told that the neck of the femur was broken.

A hidden partition doesn't show a drive letter. If it exists, depends
on the way the operation systems was installed.

No, in fact it was the first one I installed, and since it does what I want it to do, I haven't tested any others.

Usually, even M$ programs do tell what they are going to do. You'll
only have to use (and understand) the information presented.
I don't like it when unexpected things occur.
No-one does!
BTW, late last night I saw that I had a message from you in the Win10 machine. I'll reply to it today.
The Acer Vista box has a Hidden Partition, but haven't seen it on
this XP MCE 2005 SP3 box (yet).
Partitition programs do show all partitions. Easeus Partition Manager
is one that I have installed on my Win10 machines. It's free too.
The two backup programs I have used on this XP and the Vista
computers has shown the Hidden Partition on the Acer box but never
They usually do.
has shown a Hidden Partition on this XP box.
The reason is simple. On modern machines (even some XP's) the partition harbours the installation program. In the XP-era Windows was delivered
on a CD.
If needed, you can reinstall Windows either way. Please note that the "hidden" partition is NOT a backup partition.
When upgrading a Win7 machine to Windows 10, you do get sort of a
backup partition that contains the previous (ie 7) operating system.
You can reinstall the old operating system within 30 days, using that backup.
For Windows I'll check if Irfanview fills my bill.
Remember to also download the Plug-In Package for the version You
will use in case one or some of them may be needed later on.
Thanks for the advice.
When does the freezing WX end for the Aland Islands?
It has ended now, except that we may still get frost at night time if
the sky is clear.
My guess is You still have that "dirty old white stuff" on the
ground until maybe next month, is that correct?
Wrong! Although we had a shower of that stuff one evening about a week ago, but in the morning it had melted away.
Since march 22nd I have walked (with crutches so far), every day,
except the few rainy days.
I couldn't do it with snow on the ground, because cruthes too can slip.
.. I have no problem with God. It's His fan club I avoid.
