• Classic Shell

From Holger Granholm@2:20/228 to Jean Parrot on Tue May 3 21:56:00 2016
    Hello my friend,

You were right, and you knew it! I would'nt need the ClassicShell, hi.

Thanks to you, and other friends here, I got to grips with Win10.
Especially the Win key shorthands helped me tremendously to find
my way around, as did the lessons on how to use the lower left icon.

My file manager par pr‚ference still is the ZTree Windows version.

Now, using Win10 is as "easy" as using XP on my Lenovo laptop.
Speaking of Lenovo, I must also tell that the Dell Laptop I got as
a XMAS gift, also has the joy stick in the middle of the keyboard.

I got so used to the joy stick with the ThinkPads, that I prefer to
use it, even though the Dell also has the touch plate, or whatever
    that is called.

In the meantime, if I didn't tell you, I also bought a second hand
Dell stationary machine with Windows 7, and upgraded it to Win10.

That in turn resulted in buying a new 23" LCD monitor, because all
monitors i had previously were VGA (SVGA) monitors.

I'm also slowly getting on terms with Thunderbird.

Both machines now have a recovery USB stick. The Dell laptop has been
backed up to two separate free standing backup harddisks, and the Dell
Optiplex 760 has been secured to an image on a loose HD, driven by a
Plexgear USB to SATA/IDE adapter. I didn't have cabinet for that HD, hi.

So far that's the news from here. But I still run OS/2 on this machine.

Any news of our common friend Ed? He hasn't poked Fidonet for a long
    time.

Any news of our common friend Ed? He hasn't poked Fidonet for a long

I am still around, just haven't been active in FIDO echoes.

I've written a few messages in echoes on some other BBS Networks and have
been using the computer for other things.

Thanks for thinking about the big LID.

For a number of reasons I think this is the wrong question, Tom. Considering that 'change' in the IT universe is a constant on-ward & up-ward trend, you will always be on the back foot by running older software.

I got around that by going to VirtualBox. I'm currently running a HP super-dooper box with Windows 8.1, with VirtualBox installed. (Actually it's a
piece of junk but it was cheap and it works.) It runs one of either two XP virtual machines at various times, sometimes both for short periods. One XP used to run on my wife's old Ubuntu machine until I made the mistake of switching it off one day (all she ever saw was XP); like you, I didn't want to try to fix it. The other XP used to run on my Ubuntu PC, downstairs in the doghouse/man cave.

Think of VirtualBox machines as USB devices. Just plug them into a new PC with
VirtualBox installed, make a few configuration settings, and, you're back in business with your favourite whoosymahjigger software again. The trick is to know what needs backing up. ;)

Either that, or bite the bullet and start doing Fidonet with an email client over news (NNTP) servers like Jean & Allan, etc.

    Cheers,
    Paul.

Yes sure, MultiMail for Windows, (MMAILWIN) is a good one. Ed uses it,
and I use it in both OS/2, DOS and have it available for Windows 32 bit.

I'm not in the 64 bit fold, but I think there's also a version for that.
