• Large HDD For W95

From Ed Vance@1:2320/105.1 to All on Sun May 29 23:06:00 2016
I am thinking about putting a HDD in an old W95 Notebook.

The 1.3 GB HDD that is in it has had problems and I quit using it
some time ago, but I've been thinking of changing the HDD out with
a larger one, but I have no idea how large of a HDD the W95 OS can use.

The HDD it has is a 12.5mm 2.5 inch Enhanced-IDE HDD, so I most likely
will have to find a used one, as I don't think 2.5" EIDE HDD's are
    made anymore.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.

There are a lot of if-buts-maybes involved, Ed. I've seen a few people guessing at 32Gb but I dunno about that as a hard-and-fast rule...

I went back to the source, MS. Have a look at:

Sorry, mate. I can't help with the hardware. I really only do virtual PCs now.

    Cheers,

Transcend has a range of 2.5" Pata SSD's, if you're willing to spend the bucks:

If you get desperate {chuckle} I have a two like new 2.5" EIDE drives I'm sure we can 'make a deal' for one :) you'll have to cover shipping!

One is a 40GB at 5400rpm and the other is an 80GB at 7200rpm.

I've had excellent results swapping 5400rpm drives for 7200rpm on laptops that are mainly used with a power line hooked up. No overheating yet :)

They are a bit 'old' but drives keep well in my experience.

My email is in the sig if you want to take this there ...

According to Microsoft, Win95 supports FAT32 which supports (theoretically) up to 2TB, but I imagine the size will be controlled by the BIOS in the laptop, probably 32GB or less. I also have an 8GB EIDE if you want it. :) just cover shipping :)

    Thanks for the Link.
I read it and clicked the links to two others and then a few hours later
I read three more articles on MS's site.

Looks like FAT32 HDD's for W95 OSR2 can be as large as 2TB.
I didn't think EIDE HDD's came that big.

I just want a few more than 1.3GB's when I replace it.

    Thanks for the Heads Up.

Thanks, I looked through their pages but didn't see a price on any of them,
So I clicked the Where To Buy link and looked for them at a couple of stores.
I saw one advertised at $30.00 USD for 1GB SSD but don't want to buy the
    High Price Spread.

    Thanks anyway.

The Link Paul sent me said 2TB MAX but also mentioned something a little
bit over 8GB as having troubles if the BIOS can't handle it.

I've Emailed Ben and He is sending a 8GB'er my way.
I "think" that size is large enough for what I'll do with that system.

Thank You for offering a HDD to me, as I said above I'm getting one from Ben.
