the HDD in the W95 notebook (that has a bad BIOS battery).
I have tried various ways to get the notebook to start up but nothing
    has worked.

Now I'm playing with the idea of seeing if I could install the Win95 CD
that came with the notebook on to the HDD You sent me.

First I'm going to try using a Ubuntu CD to use in Demo mode to see if
I can get the Win95 CD on the HDD.

If that fails, I'll try running Ubuntu in a VM to see if I can put the
software on the two CD's that came with the notebook on the HDD.

I am not sure of just trying to Install the CD's to the HDD with this
XP computer, I'm afraid something may mess up the XP box and I'd have
to use a Backup to Restore the computer.
And Yes before I'd try doing the above I will make a new backup.

I thought I'd write of the goings on with this project so You or
someone else could give me an idea of how to get th

    Howdy! Ben,

I tried to get the AcerNote Light 370P ext 381 Notebook open to replace
the BIOS Battery but couldn't get the case off.

Some years ago I had the Service Department at the Store where I bought
the Used Notebook put a new battery in, but they couldn't do it.

Later I called Acer Support and they gave me a Name of a place who could
do it and a Toll Free telephone number to call them.

When I told the person who answered about the store couldn't find a BIOS Battery in my Notebook, they told me that it was on the bottom side of
a Printed Circuit Board and was hard to get to.

I didn't send it off to have them put a new battery in because the Company wasn't near my area where I could drive to their location to get the job
    done.

I looked for a Video on You Tube to show me how to do it but the only video
I saw was someone describing what my Model notebook does.

I did see a Acer Aspire BIOS Battery video but that is a different unit
    than mine.

When I turn it On I press the F8 Key and wait and wait and wait to see the
    Safe Mode Menu.

The old Hard Drive chatters and chatters but after a while I do see the Menu.

Then I select the regular Command Prompt - Not the Safe Mode Command Prompt.

I wait awhile and finally see the C:\> Prompt.

I can use DIR C:\ /s/-p to save a Text File to that HDD, and it makes the
    file just fine.

I use LIST.COM to read the file I made and also can use LIST.COM to look
at all of the files in other Directories on the HDD, and the HDD doesn't chatter or pause when I move from Sub-Directory to Sub-Directory.

I put that HDD in a USB adapter and try to see it in Windows Explorer on my
XP computer and it chatters away and eventually shows up as a Local Drive,
but I can't see any of the files in it. Wierd!

But that isn't the only thing wierd in this computer room. <GRIN>

I can't boot a ERD Floppy in the A: drive.
The CD that Acer supplied won't boot either, so I could use the HDD I got
    from You.

I'd like to backup the old HDD and restore the back up to Your HDD.

Computers alway win because they have inside information.

If any one has any suggestions of how I can replace the BIOS Battery or anything else to help me, I'll appreciate it. Thanks!

Sorry, don't work on laptops or the like, but you might try a linux computer and use dd to copy the old drive to the one I sent. Just a thought ... luck

p.s. you could also boot a live linux CD and use it that way.

Thank You!, I am not real familiar with Linux but I have tinkered with it
    once in a while since U'u 7.04 .

I don't have any problem using dd in the U'u Terminal as I'm still use
CMD a lot on this XP box. (I started out learning CBM BASIC on a C=64)

I will try dd to do the job with my two USB HDD Adapters.

p.s. you could also boot a live linux CD and use it that way.

I have a U'u 10.04 LTS ISO I can RUN in a VM, so I will try using dd that
    way.

I did try a few days ago to see if I could run the Acer Recovery CD
in U'u 10.04 and fix the old HDD but I ran out of time and had to shut the computer down that night.

I am a Very Trying Person, just ask my wife. <GRIN>

If I can't get dd to do the Dirty Work, I WILL send both drives down South
to You to let You play with them on a very low priority basic, of course.

Normally a machine starts with a message about how to access to the
BIOS It should do it even though the BIOS battery is dead.

    Yes, Mine does that.
It says the BIOS Battery is dead and offers two F Key choices.
    1. Go to the BIOS
    2. Continue with starting the computer

If I Continue the start up Windows 95 fails looking for a VXD(sp?) file.
So I hold the F8 Key forever to get the thing to show me the Safe Mode Menu.

Also because of the dead BIOS battery I've learned any changes I make to
the BIOS is lost after I've selected YES and presed the Enter Key.

It won't let me change the Date or Time if I select the
BASIC SYSTEM SETTINGS option, but I can enter the Date and Time at a
Command Prompt after I've selected that option from the Safe Boot Menu
for Command Prompt (not the Safe Mode Command Prompt).

The computer will let the Date I set stay the same but the Time stays at
    12:00 AM (Midnight).

I tried running CHKDSK /f and it tells me to run SCANDISK on the Acer HDD.
I ran SCANDISK many many times and it don't find any problems with
the Acer HDD, even though XP Disk Management says different.

I tried to open the Acer 370P to see if I can replace the BIOS battery
but I couldn't figure out how to get the case open.

    And that hurts.

Even though I don't know everything about computer things, I have opened
up Receivers and Transmitters and Accessories in my Amateur Radio shack
and other electronic things around the house to see what makes them work,
Plus I can read a Schematic, but there isn't a Howard Sams PhotoFacts
published for my AcerNote Light 370P Notebook.

At the BIOS screen I can select the other two options for
SYSTEM SECURITY and POWER MANAGEMENT SETTINGS
and change the settings but after telling the thing YES I want to save
BIOS Settings, and pressing the Enter Key any settings I changed are lost.

The default setting for CD-ROM BOOTABLE in the BIOS is [Disabled] .
I can't tell the thing to BOOT the Acer Library CD to Recover the system.
I know that there is always something or some one to keep me humble,
and it's this W95 notebook right now. <GRIN>

I have ran Ubuntu in a VM, the Acer HDD doesn't show up, even though it
is listed as the G: HDD in Windows My Computer.
Ubuntu shows Ben's HDD and the CD-ROM in the VM but I am not sure if
I could Run the Acer Library CD in Ubuntu and it would put what is needed
to make the computer work with Ben's HDD.

I sure wouldn't want the internal HDD to be changed over to W95, even though I've made a recent BackUp I could use to restore the OS.

I don't know enough about Ubuntu to run the CD in a Ubuntu VM to risk it.

This is as much as I know to write about the goings on here in the
    Computer Room.

Any and All advice is appreciated. Thanks In Advance.

Next I'm going to look at the eHow and iFixIt websites to see if I can
    find some help there.

Quite odd. I have a ThinkPad with a dead BIOS battery and it works OK
after having asked for the Date/Time. Saving any changes to the BIOS
stay put, even at new start. XPpro on that machine.

I tried to open the Acer 370P to see if I can replace the BIOS

In most cases the screws holding a laptop together, are hidden under
