Hello Tim!
Decided to change the colour scheme in the reader and editor .....
Text: R=255, G=255, B=255
Quotes: R=166, G=202, B=240
Control Information: R=192, G=220, B=192
Background: R=100, G=100, B=100
Looks great and suits my taste perfectly
until I start to write a message. I'm having trouble seeing the cursor because it's a very thin vertical line and it's almost the same colour as my new background colour.
I've tried changing the background colour to a slightly lighter
shade and that does improve matters but I feel that a block cursor would further improve matters, what do you think?

On my (calibrated) monitor this is quote horrible and milky with low text/background contrast. Since standard white is not the brightest, it looks like bright grey on light grey ...
Block cursors are today used to indicate overwrite mode. Try pressing <Insert> in the editor to see one.
Thus, this is IMO not an option here (and would involve changing the underlying control).
I truly believe your display needs help.
However, there is also a lot of difference in human perception (let alone taste), that might also be involved here.
Will check, if there are options to modify the cursor itself in any way without rewriting the control.

Turns out I can tell the control to use a "half block" cursor (meaning it covers the lower half of the character box). But it feels odd/antique.

I currently have black text, dark green quotes, grey control info and white background both in reader and editor. (I also have it this way in GoldEd+, BTW)

Note that I've changed the backgound to R=75, G=75, B=75

That's a very nice easy-on-the-eyes combo you got there.
