Evidence of an Active Volcano on Venus Image Credit: [3]NASA, [4]JPL-Caltech, [5]ESA, [6]Venus Express: [7]VIRTIS, [8]USRA, [9]LPI Explanation: Are volcanoes still active on Venus? More [10]volcanoes are known on Venus than Earth, but when [11]Venusian volcanoes last erupted is not directly known. [12]Evidence bolstering very recent volcanism on Venus has recently been uncovered, though, right here on Earth. [13]Lab results showed that images of [14]surface lava would become dim in the infrared in only months in the dense Venusian atmosphere, a dimming not seen in ESA's [15]Venus Express images. Venus Express entered orbit around [16]Venus in 2006 and [17]remained in contact with Earth until 2014. Therefore, the [18]infrared glow (shown in false-color red) recorded by Venus Express for [19]Idunn Mons and featured here on a NASA [20]Magellan image indicates that this volcano erupted very recently -- and is still active today. Understanding the [21]volcanics of [22]Venus might lead to insight about the [23]volcanics on Earth, as well as [24]elsewhere [25]in [26]our [27]Solar System.
